So, as you know if you read my last post on the summer happenings, you’ll know that my family has moved from its house in the suburbs to a third floor apartment in the city very near my new day job.
While the move was made to further our family’s pursuit of happiness, there were still a few things that were difficult to give up; one of which was our herb garden… so one of the things we’ve decided to do is to continue having a herb garden on our apartment patio. We have a fairly large patio for an apartment and want to put it to good use while we build our businesses and stockpile funds from the day job until we are able to make the move to the rural house; without any debt, of course.
Why an herb garden?
While we don’t really consider ourselves wanna be urban homesteaders, the reasons why we want to continue our use of fresh herbs by having a patio herb garden is not only for the culinary aspects of those herbs (of which there are many) but also because of the medicinal and cleanliness aspects as well.
Additionally, we want to teach our young son about caring for the earth and how beneficial the natural world around us can be if we know how to properly utilize the resources. Besides, the fragrance of these herbs is just marvelous!
So, what kind of herbs did we plant?
- Sweet Basil
- Cinnamon Basil
We were even able to successfully revive our bunch of garlic chives that we took with us from the house we sold. Yes, they were neglected a bit until we got settled.
Eventually, we will get our own equipment to run a small distillery and harvest our own essential oils – but that will have to wait until we’re on the rural property.
Fun Fact: I worked for a nursery for a few months, not one of the kid nurseries, a plant nursery. I was able to learn quite a bit about the different varieties of herbs while working there. If you ever get the chance to work part time at a nursery its a great learning experience – at least it was for me!
The Future List
I have begun a list of herbs we’ll be acquiring and will be developing a description of the uses of the herbs at a future date. I just love that there are so many practical uses for these plants !
- Did you know Thymol is an active ingredient in Listerine?
- Garlic Chives
- Cinnamon Basil
- Pineapple Sage
What herbs do you find useful? I’d love to hear about your own herbal adventures! Let us know in the comments below!
