Day of Happiness Celebrations: Q&A
Happiness means different things to different people, what does Happiness mean to you?
Happiness is about going through life with a joyful heart, pursuing your passions, and surrounding yourself with the people you love. It’s about being grateful for what you have and about striving to be a better person each and every day. My faith is what gives me my purpose in life, and helps guide me in how I live.
Do you believe happiness is an emotion or more of a state of mind?
I think happiness can occur as an emotion in short bursts, but for it to be an ongoing part of your life, it’s all in the mindset you have. You can’t control your circumstances or the cards you’ve been dealt, but you can control your attitude, work ethic, building new skills, seeking out new relationships and strengthening existing ones, etc. Hard circumstances are going to happen in life, which are out of our control, but we get to choose how we react to them.
Do you consider being happy important to you? Why?
I think deep down it’s human nature, we all want to be happy. I mean, why wouldn’t we? But as I alluded to in the previous question, I think that a lot of it comes down to the mindset you have and the people you surround yourself with. I consider it important, but at the same time it doesn’t take a whole lot for me to be happy. I try to practice gratitude for everything I’ve been blessed with, rather than dwelling on what I don’t have.
What do you consider a fundamental barrier to Happiness in your life?
I consider myself happy in my life now. I try not to look ahead too much because I want to enjoy where I’m currently at in life. Of course I make plans for the future and am saving for retirement, but I think it can be a dangerous cycle to get into a mindset of “once I have this, then I’ll be happy.” If you aren’t happy now, you’ll likely not be happy when you get that next “thing.” So as long as I have people I love, am making progress on my life goals, and have enough money to pay the bills I’m happy.
How important is wealth and money to your own happiness?
For me I’ve found that money can be a big source of stress, so I’ve strived to remove that stress as much as possible by building up emergency savings. I don’t need to be rich or have a lot of possessions to feel happy. I’m a big believer in “money doesn’t buy happiness.” That being said, money does buy the freedom for how you spend your time, so I am working towards becoming debt free and then eventually becoming financially independent at some point down the road.
How important is health and wellness to happiness?
I think health is one of the biggest factors in happiness. If you don’t have good health it’s much harder to keep a positive outlook on life and pursue the things that bring you joy. It’s still possible, but it’s much more difficult. Eating healthy and staying active are important to remaining healthy, and in turn boost your happiness.
What has been the happiest moment in your life?
I’ve been very blessed, when I think back on my life there are a lot of happy memories that come to mind in a variety of areas of life. If I was to point to one specific moment though, it would be getting married. It was an incredible day, and we were surrounded by our families and closest friends.
I wrote a post about my goals for 2017. My top two are to finish paying off our student loans (about $7,500 left) and to instill better daily habits (specifically reading more books, exercising more, and cutting down on checking my phone so much).
Do you consider giving to others or charity work an important part of your own Pursuit and why?
Oh yes, definitely. Giving back, whether it’s your time or money, is extremely important. I’ve found in my own life that very often the times when I give back end up being the happiest. We give money each month and are active in our church. I also try to write blog posts that can help people with their finances as much as possible. Trying to save money and build up wealth is important to me because it means I can have the ability to give even more.
I feel like I’m constantly learning, so it’s hard to narrow it down to 2, but I’d say that gratitude is one of the biggest keys in life. The more grateful you are for what you have, the happier you’ll be and the more of a positive impact you’ll have on those around you. Secondly, small steps can lead to big successes. Sometimes people get so worried about figuring out the perfect course of action to avoid making any mistakes, and this delays them from ever getting started. Focus on making small progress every day, and you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.
If you could recommend only three websites/books/articles to anyone reading this, what would they be, and why?
Well since one of my biggest passions is personal finance, I’ll recommend some of my favorite personal finance resources. “The Total Money Makeover” by Dave Ramsey is a great resource for people first starting out on their journey. Two websites I would highly recommend are The Simple Dollar and Rockstar Finance.
My blog is Spills Spot, and I write about personal finance. My main goal is to help millennials take control of their situation and learn better money management skills. I strive to make all my writing easy to relate to, especially for people who are early in their financial journey.
