Day of Happiness Celebrations: Q&A
Happiness means different things to different people, what does Happiness mean to you?
To us, happiness is being able to live the life we’ve dreamed of – so a debt-free, balanced life where we have the time to hang out with our friends, buy what we want, but still have the responsibilities of a job we love, too.
Do you believe happiness is an emotion or more of a state of mind?
We’re definitely in the state of mind camp.
Do you consider being happy important to you? Why?
Yes! Happiness is very important because you can’t lead a fulfilled life without it. Who wants to be successful but unhappy? Not us!
What do you consider a fundamental barrier to Happiness in your life?
For us, it’s definitely our money issues. We’re both paying off student loans, credit card debt, and trying to start saving for our futures. Once the debt is gone, we’ll be able to live happy lives and have a happy and secured future.
How important is wealth and money to your own happiness?
It’s important, but not in the more money-more happiness way people tend to think. You need money for the necessities in life (shelter, food, clothes), but you also need money for those little luxuries that make you happy (a fancy coffee drink on a nice day, the roller skates you use every weekend, a gift for a loved one – even a piece of art you look at every day). Money is important to happiness, but it’s not everything.
How important is health and wellness to happiness?
Again, they are very important. We believe live has to be balanced – not too much of any one thing. We don’t want a lot of money or a lot of friends, we want just enough to be happy. For us, that includes our health. You need to take care of yourself and treat yourself well in order to be happy for the very simple reason that it’s tough to be happy when you feel physically awful.
What has been the happiest moment in your life?
The happiest moment in our lives (together) was probably watching each other hit our stride career-wise. For me, it was finally getting my dream job after years of school and a doctoral degree. For my sister, it was moving to LA and changing career-paths.
No specific goals for the year, we just want to keep being true to ourselves.
Do you consider giving to others or charity work an important part of your own Pursuit and why?
Yes, we think helping others is one of the best ways to help yourself. Volunteering opens your eyes to all sorts of things you may not have experienced yet, and it shows you that happiness can exist in all circumstances – you just have to work for it. Additionally, the people you meet when volunteering (whether other volunteers or those being helped) are some of the best people.
1) Be yourself, just let go of everyone else’s expectations for you. 2) Don’t assume someone else’s happiness is going to be yours too. You need to find what makes you happy first.
If you could recommend only three websites/books/articles to anyone reading this, what would they be, and why?
We would recommend The Balance Project by Susie Orman Schnall (it’s fiction!), The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo, and Dave Ramsey’s The Total Money Makeover because we think these 3 books can help everyone lead happier, more balanced lives. Also because we love these books.
